Can someone recommend the kind of gutters we should have on our home? The ones we have are the open types that have to be cleaned. They have leaves in them the day after they're cleaned.

There seems to be a lot of "snake oil" in the gutter business, so please make a recommendation based on your personal experience.

I like Leaf Guard gutters.
I have never had them, but in a former life as a roofer, folks I talked with who had them seemed to like them very much.
They are not cheap.

Personally, as I did not want to replace gutters, I used a mesh insert, Flo-Free, on my existing gutters. It worked very well at shedding tree debris, with the exception of an area where a valley dumps a lot of dirt into a small area. At that location, they tended to clog with dirt.

Your issue with gutter snake oil is true. One of the issues is that gutters are not installed to any code, and there is no "standard installation." Every installer does it their own way. Often that is a bad thing.

You can make your own fairly cheaply.
Buy the 8' lenghts of mesh cloth.
Cut them 2" wider than the gutter to allow them to bow skyward in a convex fashion.
It'll never come out or rust.

Don't do business with Kemp from Richmond, Va who sell Mastershield. They will not give good service and they are very expensive. Ours were never installed correctly in the first place.

We had leaf-guard gutters on a house we completely renovated in CT. They were not cheap but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
As it is I pay to have our gutters cleaned 2x yearly. We have a walkout basement and I am NOT going up there.
