Hi,
We are looking for some reasonably priced (less than $10 plate) restaurants in Durham with a decent vegetarian selection? Any recommendations? Thanks!

I love Baba Ghannouj - they are a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean restaurant with 4 locations: One in Cary in the plaza with BJs and Cost Plus, one in Durham in the north east intersection of the 55 and 54, and one in Durham on 225 west Hwy 54, and one in Chapel Hill somewhere. The one on the 54/55 has a lunch buffet for the RTP crowd that is really good. Their falafel and tabouli is great.

In the downtown durham/Duke area Blue Corn Cafe, Federal, Elmo's, Chai's, Meditaranian Delights, Dales Indian and Cosmic Cantina (ordered roughly from most expensive to least) will all have multiple vegetarian options for under $10.

Watt's Grocery and Another Thyme may have lunch options under $10. Another Thyme probably has the most extensive vegetarian menu in the area, but is a little higher priced (around $10-15/entree).

I would recommend-

Elmo's Diner elmosdiner.com
Blue Corn Cafe Blue Corn Cafe (http://www.bluecorn-tosca.com/bc_menus.asp - broken link)
Foster's market Foster's Market : Upscale Market, Deli, Cafe, Grocery & Catering Companies
Gugelhupf cafe Guglhupf Bakery & Pâtisserie - Store (http://www.guglhupf.com/store/store.html - broken link)

My best friend happens to be vegetarian and used to live in Durham. Every visit, these are the places she insists we have to go. She goes to Elmo's for breakfast, and Blue Corn Cafe for lunch. She gets a box of pastries and a sandwich to go from Gugelhupf on her way out of town.

At Elmo's my veggie friends like to order the omelets and the veggie burgers.

If you like real Mexican and tacos - Chubby's on 9th is awesome. They use 100% compostable plates and utensils, too. A veggie taco meal is ~$5.

The Baba Ghanouj at 55/54 has an excellent buffet, but unfortunately it is not open for dinner. If you can ever get there for lunch, it has some of the best rice pudding I have ever had.

City Beverage on 751 near 54 has a few American-fare veggie options for under $10.

I thought Chubby's was my secret peace of heaven! Ah well. They are pretty tasty especially the melted cheese. There is a Baba Ghanouj off of Hwy 54 as well in the Harris Teeter shopping center where Shiki Sushi is located. They work more like counter service.

They are open for dinner now, as of around October.

Excellent!

Sorry about letting the cat-out-of-the-bag with Chubby's. I just assumed that most internet-savvy food lovers in Durham were familiar with it by this point. It has had a lot of coverage over on carpedurham.

Toast in 5-points is a great one for sandwiches. A few vegetarian options, all under $10.
