They will charge you upfront (don't quote me but it's ~$70-80) & then issue you a black & white license plate that says "multi-year" rather than the standard red & white trailer plate. There will never be any additional registration fees so I'm very excited. One less thing to worry about.

For trailers in NC, they require titling & license plate/registration. I was also told there is personal property tax, but I've never been billed in the past for a trailer prop. tax. I was registering a trailer that came from a non-title state (NY) and ran into a few problems, but had the prior owner fill out a notarized affadavit & then was able to get an NC title issued.
Correct. I got a lifetime reg for my motorcycle trailer, but had to provide proof of purchase and the title/VIN number. I still get tax bills each year but I don't have to do anything about the plate at least.

If you use a multi year tag on a trailer, the property tax will be collected by your tax office through your home tax.

I've been getting separate yearly tax bills on the trailer...as far as I recall.

You're probably right. I don't fully know how they do the taxes.

Wink NC Multi Year Trailer License Plate

July 2016 We just moved from NJ to NC, and we titled and we paid for a new trailer license plate for my Hobie cat sailboat 16'.
Multi year boat trailer license plate cost $98 and was told I would not have to pay yearly renewals...but I would have to pay Property Tax on the trailer every year. DMV said that my town would notify me of the amount of property tax each year. And I did not have to contact my township. DMV said Your town can access your DMV records for the taxes.

I am starting to realize that living here in NC that property taxes are low, but NC charges tax on "EVERYTHING". Living in NC since 2015-2016 so far is only saving me about $200 per month. Of course its so hot here you need to run a/c 7/24/300 days per year which is more expensive then NY/NJ area. I itemize everything. Sorry for the unrelated comment. Overall NC is still a great place to live, we are finding a lot to do here.

I just did mine last week, it's $103, plus there was a $5 Notary fee, so it cost me $108.

I am reitterating this point, as it used to be less, and recently increased.
