I'm thinking about moving to Raleigh, NC with my 5 year-old son. I'm currently living in Appleton, WI and I'm a Radiologic Technologist. I'm wondering how the job market is out there? Is it a safe place to raise my son and how are the schools? Does anyone recommend certain areas to live and any good hospitals or clinics? I have visited Raleigh in the past and loved it, I'm just wondering if it's wise to move to a place where I don't know anyone.
There are lots of people moving in, and plenty of internet groups (such as meetup--or even this one!) where you can meet people. BUT, I hope you are planning on finding a job here BEFORE moving, as unemployment is the highest it's been in many years, in the area. Don't assume you could move first and find a job once you're here (not saying you do think that, but it boggles the mind how many do have that mindset).
I agree. I have known too many people that have moved here thinking they would find work once they got here and ended up moving right back to where they came from. It is a risky move, not one I would make with a 5 y/o. But I do love it here.
There are several hospitals and university teaching/research hospitals in our area. Duke and UNC Chapel Hill have hospitals associated with their medical schools. Wake Medical and Rex Hospital are private/profit hospitals. Seems there are always job listings in the local paper, Raleigh News and Observer, for people in medical/nursing fields - try their on-line job classified section to get a feel for what's being recruited.
If you decide to move, don't worry about not knowing anyone. Sign your son up for a soccer or baseball league and he'll have an instant set of buddies. Seems all the churches have youth programs that are full of kids too.
