Hello

My family and I are being relocated from Fairfield County CT to Raleigh-Durham and I need some input on where to live. We have 3 young kids and good schools are most important. We want at least 1/2 acre in the $550K range. Also looking for a great community with a downtown...not really into the strip malls. Any ideas? Wake Forest seems interesting...Chapel Hill looks great but pretty pricey. Thanks for you input!!!

If good schools is most important then Chapel Hill is it. That's the primary reason why it's so pricey, because frankly, other nearby towns offer more options for dining, shopping, and other activities.

I would think that Chapel Hill would be a good target for you.

There are some selections in Raleigh, Durham, and even an historic home in Apex, but it would seem for lot size, schools, and downtown requirements that Chapel Hill offers the most choice within your price parameters.

Homes on over 1/2 acre in Wake County tend to be suburban, with the suburban plazas that go with newer development.

Carrboro also has a good school system, and $550k could go a long way depending on what type of home you are looking for.

Enloe High school in Raleigh is quite strong. Ranked in the top 60 High schools in Newsweek for the past couple years. Raleigh Charter High school is also very good, as is Broughton High school. There are many strong elementary and middle schools in the area too. Although I do think Chapel Hill would be a good fit, and East Chapel Hill High and Chapel Hill High are great, I might also look ITB (inside the beltline) in Raleigh...but I'm biased

For your price range wake forest would probably be better, try Heritage and Wakefield Plantation. But Chapel hill is where you go f you are looking for a downtown. Cary houses will not have a lot of land not at that price range. Apex may be a good fit, but definitely cheaper thatn WF/CH

Wake Forest is a good choice for Raleigh imo, also look at the area north of 540 to the west, around Falls lake - its woodsy but close to shopping , lots of big lots in your price range. Chapel Hill and Carrboro are also nice - Chatam county in general, although cost of living and taxes are higher, but coming from CT, you won't worry too much about taxes as the overall cost of living is lower.
