I think in general most of the yards in nicer areas that look a little neglected this year are more often a result of the severe drought we had last year. People had to cut back on watering and much of the yard maintenance drive went with it. Some people jump back into their lawn programs faster than others. I expect you will see more yards on the mend as time goes on as long as we don't slip into drought conditions again.

We have one house in our neighborhood that has a terrible yard. It is literally overrun with weeds - to the point you can no long see any grass. It gets mowed once in a while, but not regularly, so at times you'd wonder if the house hadn't been vacant for a while. It's a real eyesore.

But here's what people may not know: The husband/father who lives in that house is struggling with cancer. Taking care of the grass is not their priority right now. It's understandable.

(Yes, some neighbors have offered to help with the yard.)
