Dear Raleigh friends,

A couple questions:

1. Is a walk from the Raleigh Amtrak station to the State Capital area safe? Any estimate as to how far it is?

2. Is there a decent place to stay in Downtown Raleigh that is fairly cost effective and safe?

Thank you,
Michael Ryan

Around a mile or so I'd say. Yes, it's safe. Try the Clarion downtown on Hillsborough Street....and yes, it's safe.

Yes, it's safe. There's also cab/bus service if you're really paranoid. I'd just walk it though. The R-Line is a free hybrid bus circulator you can take as well. You can pick it up at stop #11 on the corner of Harrington & Davie Streets by cutting through the Depot's cobblestone parking lot or down the at #12 (Dawson & Cabarrus Streets).

The downtown Mariott is actually closer to the Amtrak station than the Clarion. Added benefit of the Marriott being next to the convention center and on Fayetteville Street so you'd be near some nightlife.

Either way, these are your best bets for a hotel near the station:

As far as safety, I will add that the train station area is less safe after dark. That whole area used to be pretty sketchy, but has greatly improved in the past decade.

It's not the greatest neighbhorhood in Raleigh, but I've been in the area after dark and didn't feel paraniod.

The Station sits between the Warehouse District and the Boylan Height's historic neighborhood where the mayor of Raleigh lives.
I don't feel unsafe at all. It's just not a suburban type environment. Some people just don't feel comfortable in environments that are different from what they are used to. I have no idea if the OP falls into that category.

As for the hotel, the OP asked for value in his choice. I agree that the Clarion would be a good choice based on this information. Plus, the Clarion hotel sort of bridges both Glenwood South and the Warehouse Districts. This would give the OP a variety of places to go in the evenings within an easy walk.

Yes, it's NEAR some great neighborhoods...but it's not in them. It's not an insult to say that it's not the best neighborhood itself....especially when I also stated that I don't feel unsafe in the area at all.

I used to live within walking distance of the station and took the train - many times after dark, so it isn't the urban environment (or as much as you can call that section of downtown Raleigh a true urban environment) that bothers me. It is more the aggressive panhandling and shady characters that I've seen around the station at night (and sometimes during the day).

It isn't you will be robbed or beaten unsafe, but it is less definitely less safe at night than during the day in that area.

I wouldn't worry about it if you are use to big cities. Raleigh is a quiant little town compared to other places out there. I get the impression that you are a business traveler, so you may be use to big cities. Just ignore the bums like you would anywhere else. And if they get to aggressive just stare them down.
