We live in NE Raleigh and I can't believe by comparison how little rain we have actually received.
Sure, we hear the thunder, see the low cloud deck, then get a few drops and that's it.
Ummm...every. single. night. We started staining our deck about 3 weeks ago, and we got about 1/3 done. We need it to be dry for 2-3 days in a row, at least, before we can finish it...and it hasn't been dry for 24 hours since we started the project, and it looks terrible.. ha ha! Don't get me wrong, this is a welcome change compared to the drought we had for some years there...but ugh! I just want to finish my deck
It sure does seem to be raining often these days. I feel like the past two weeks it has rained almost every evening for at least 15-20 minutes between 5-7pm. My grass actually looks green in August for a change! Don't get me wrong, I am happy for the rain in light of the terrible drought we had last year. I was just wondering if this is "typical" Triangle summer weather or a fluke.
I agree with you and was surprised to read in yesterdays N&O (NO News Observer) that we are in drought conditions in the Triangle. I know they have had staff reductions but the guys left there really need to get out of the office to see that that it rains every evening
Triangle in a 'drought watch' - Local & State - News & Observer (http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/1630889.html - broken link)
An isolated thunderstorm tracking through the Triangle each day isn't enough to provide the water we need, even if it does rain cats and dogs as they pass through. What's missing are any "rainy days" across the region that really feed the reservoirs.
Lived here for 40 years it is NOT a fluke. This is normal typical weather, especially for late July/August. They are traditionally our wettest months of the year.
Nope, it's not unusual at all. We had that in Houston, too. The rain/storms are generated by the heat of the day. Unless there's a high pressure system sitting over the area, it's likely to happen.
Definitely a fluke. I've experienced many more dry/drought summers than I have ones like this.
Actually no--the dry ones were more the "flukes"; it's fairly typical to get late-afternoon showers here.
Years ago, I used to do community theatre, outdoors, and it was always a nail-biter as to whether we'd have a show at 8 that might, with showers sometime right up until 7:30 or so.
I was thinking the same thing. You could set your watch to it in FL.
Actually, the time that it rains is not measured by a clock. It is measured by the exact moment when I get my kids slathered with sunscreen and we have walked 1/2 of the way to the pool. Then the clouds suddenly appear.
It was the same when I was a kid here in NC, though the rain generally came immediately after my mother had dropped me at the pool when she was not scheduled to return for 2-3 hours.
