Good suggestions, but be careful with the commute on RoxboroRd/501 S into Durham in the AM if you look at Rougemount or Bahama.
You can also look at NW Raleigh/SE Durham County. At 8AM in the morning it takes 25-30 minutes from the Leesville Rd/540 area in NW Raleigh to the Braggtown/Oxford Commons area via US70/I85. Some would say that if you live in the NW Raleigh/Wake County area you have better schools too but I don't have a dog in that particular fight.
I would have said Trinity Park in Durham last week...but not this week. I have a friend that lives there and she has heard gun shots before, but nothing that was happening right in her neighborhood. This past sunday a Duke student was robbed and shot in broad daylight in Trinity Park. Just be careful and look at crime maps anywhere you may decide to live.
mj, this is your second post in just a matter of days pointing out this RARE occurrence of a shooting in Trinity Park. Do you also frequently point out the shootings in Raleigh?
And why would you think of Trinity Park... 330K will not get you very much house in Trinity Park.
OP, if you search in South Durham you will have several options in your price range. But don't limit your search just to South Durham. I would look in other parts of Durham as well.

The traffic can be bad during rush hour on Roxboro Rd. Although, I find it to be better than traffic in SW Durham and most of Raleigh. I didn't mention places in SE Durham b/c I am only familiar with the neighborhoods with smaller lots. I also didn't mention Raleigh, b/c I find living in Durham would be a better commute/less traffic and more for the money. SW Durham I find is a longer commute/more traffic and not as many larger lots available as North Durham.
The areas I listed have great schools and are considered some of the best in the Triangle area. I would do research on individual schools though since some on here don't know any better and will say Wake County is better than Durham. Some will also mention the socioeconmics in Durham County and that's why they usually rate lower than Wake. This is true, although in Northern Durham County, at least at the elementary school level that really isn't an issue and therefore the schools rate high and I stand by them being some of the best. I am specifically talking about Mangum and Little River. Both of these schools I attended. Also, there will be a new middle school out that way and I am sure it will have just as high standards.
These neighborhoods I mentioned are more rural, but still close enough to get to shopping in 10-15 minutes. That is where you will find the lot size you are looking for. If you are looking to live in the city you can find older neighborhoods with half an acre or more. Just make sure you check all of Durham out for yourself or rent before you buy so you don't make an unnecessary long commute!
Try Apex, Cary, Chapel Hill and maybe Wake Forest.
NOT Durham and not many areas in Raleigh!
Hey Charlton Dude,
The commute from Apex and Cary to North Durham is pretty rediculous. In Durham you get more house/land for the money, the area is just as safe, less traffic, and schools are just as good.
