Anytime you decide to do something to "better" yourself, you can depend on about a million other people wanting to do the same thing.
My home town (Detroit) has been decimated by the ever expanding suburbs and exurbs (whatever). People started to move to Canton MI a few years ago to get away from crime and pollution and other ethnic groups and traffic. Guess what. Canton went from a township of a few thousand to a city of over 50,000 in less than 12 years. Now the Ford road exit off 275 there is a nightmare (with the requisite new Ikea store just opened). That is just one example.
You are going to see the same things in NC. Of course it will take a while and there are still lots of older places where not much has changed, but those are not where the jobs and the "new" everything is.
How are you an expert in all these places (Detroit, NC, and NY?) Do you visit the former 2 a lot? You are so right about Canton.... there is a big soccer tournament every Memorial Day with 400+ teams and that Ford road is HECK This is what I hate about metro detroit, its all 1 big sprawl - you have no idea where 1 city begins and the the next one ends other than the sign saying "you have entered so and so city", its all 1 big urban jungle
I guess the trick is to move to an area and enjoy the 15 years you can before it turns bad hah. Since life only lasts for so long you only need to find a new unexploited place about 4-5x in your life! But alas at this rate there will be nothing left in the US. Off to Costa Rica I go in 2020!
Would like any info on towns that are in close proximity to the RDU Airport. Also, like the older established neighborhoods with some property. Any tips? Thanks...
Just curious about fences and in-ground pools, Are they allowed where you are moving to?
Yes, fences were a must for us because of our children and dog. In-ground pools are allowed but not above ground. We read the restrictions 3 times before we made an offer on the house, because while we don't mind some restrictions, it was very important to us to feel "free". The home we purchased is a few years old, so although it doesn't have a fence yet, all the landscaping is completed. I know in the restrictions you have to have landscaping approved , but we were not interested in a brand new home for some of those reasons, (let alone the cost of some landscaping, could get pretty steep).

You're right, the quote I got for landscaping is insane
About the long-term plans to build a pool, I'm wondering if the HOA can establish a restriction to build pools sometime before you decide (and have the budget) to build your pool. Not sure if 100% votes are needed for this.

I was a Baptist Minister for Years, so we kind of sound like we're experts on everything. Also, when you live somewhere as a minister, you really enter into the local culture by necessity. Actually, my mom still lives in NC, so I visit there a lot and I still have a sister and her extended family in Detroit. Also, I just finished masters degree in Urban Affairs, so this kid of stuff just fascinates me.
I have another sister in LA and she constantly tries to lure me to the Left Coast. While I miss family, moving back to Detroit or to LA, just is not very appealing. I like the vibrant street life and an active central city that we have in NYC. For now, this big dirty and noisy city is home.
