Myself and some other downtown Cary neighborhoods have begun referring to our central Cary area "inside the Maynard loop (IML) " in hopes to get in on some of the "IBT" snobbery (read: property values).
If they can still call Cary a "town", and call a Chinese neighborhood in lower Manhattan "Little Italy"; they will be able to call the circular formation of interstate that encompasses the oldest, densest area of the city of Raleigh "the Beltline" for the foreseeable future.
Maybe, but this brings it line with standard Interstate naming conventions so it shouldn't be too complicated. I think it is I440 East if you are travelling West to East and I440 West if you are going the other way.
I think the best way to think of it is in terms of where the road is actually taking you, not the direction it happens to be going in at any particular section.
Exactly.... Most people are used to North, South, East, & West road designations no matter where they travel across the country and not "Inner" and "Outer". I never liked it myself and am glad to see the change.
When I first read this thread, I wondered "where the hell is the beltline going?"
it's getting replaced by a system of canals. it will be more eco-friendly.
why can't they just make it one road name for the whole circle and call it clockwise or counter clockwise. like Beltline CCW or Beltline CW. and then have 40/440 continue once you're out of that. that would be the most logical, but not part of the current system.

One challenge is that I-440 is not really a circle. You notice it most at the odd junction with I-40 in the SW corner of I-440 (where you have to exit in order to stay on the outer beltline).
