I am looking for someone in the know here.

I was thinking of taking a train to Charlotte from Durham for a Bobcats game a few weeks ago but of course that can't happen now. Anyway I downgraded to taking a trip to Raleigh. I was thinking about visiting "Marbles" and "The Pit" for lunch.

Anyone here down a thing to say if it is worthwhile or should I just drive and get it over with. I just hate the Raleigh traffic but it might not be that bad.

What yall think?

From Durham to Raleigh? I would definitely drive...

I wish our mass transit system was better!

Unless you just want to ride on a train for the train experience I'd drive. We have friends who rode the train up from Charlotte with their boys just so the boys could get to ride on a train. They had a great time, but it wasn't necessarily the quickest way from point A to point B. If you're going to Marbles, I'd assume you have small kids, too, so the train ride could be part of the fun. I don't remember where the train station is in Raleigh, though, and if it's not walking distance from your destinations you'd need to make sure you've got transportation.

For that distance, just consider Greyhound? I used to take the bus a lot between Raleigh and Chapel Hill when I was in college. I love trains, and I guess there's no reason you couldn't do Dur-Ral, but a bus would probably be cheaper.

There are only 2 trains in each direction a day, so if you want to do the trip in one day you are restricted to the 10:13am train from Durham returning on the 4:50pm train that afternoon at a cost of $12.50. As someone else pointed out it's hardly a mass transit system but more of 'an interesting day out' system. Perhaps an additional couple of light rail trams running every 2 hours would make it a much more practical way to get people to adopt public transport here which could be accomplished without any significant investment as the infrastructure already exists

We took the Carolinian to DC and it was great.

Amtrak, however, is not a local commuter rail and would not be convenient with its limited daily service.

You can go as far North as NYC on the Carolinian. Beats driving for these longer runs.

Oh I second this! Discovery Place is awesome and your kids could spend an entire day there. I did and I don't even have children.

Thanks. Yall. I guess I was thinking of doing this more for the experience. The price to get to Charolette was $50 and for three people that adds up quickly. I'll keep everyone informed if it happens. I have been known lately to wake up and call out of work and have a "me" day as for some strange reason I need them more and more lately. lol

From the info Beermat provided, it seems like a nice day trip. I could easily spend a day walking around downtown Raleigh; lots to see, do, and eat. My son has a little obsession with Thomas the Tank Engine, so we rode the train from Raleigh to Greensboro and back. The Greensboro train station was very nice, we were there for under an hour before our train home. I was surprised and how much I enjoyed the ride. We met a couple headed to Raleigh for the day.
