We are considering a move to the Cary/Apex area. I have a 2 yr old with high functioning Autism. Right now he has therapists come to the house through Early Intervention. We also get automatic free medical assistance here in PA, for kids with an Autism diagnosis. So he gets to go to a place called Theraplay for speech and OT and I don't have to pay the co-pays. Just wondering if I would be able to get medical assistance in NC, and what types of schools are available for him. He will also be starting preschool in the fall. I would like to send him to a typical preschool for half of the week, and a special needs preschool for the other days.

Best schools? Therapy? Early intervention? How are the public school in the Cary area with special needs kids? My son is 2 1/2 and considering a move to NC.

The state runs early intervention until age 3. They provide a general therapist (the therapist we had concentrated on OT skills). After 3, the Wake County school district handles it. We have been happy with our son's schools. For Pre-K he went to Lynn Rd, and now for K-2 he is going to Forest Pines. He has had great teachers at both schools. The schools are in North Raleigh. I do not know about the schools in Cary.
You will have to fight a little bit to get additional services like OT and Speech. TEACCH is a good resource along with the Autism Society of NC.

I would recommend contacting TEACCH in Chapel Hill. They have a well respected program that I believe is part of the Univ of North Carolina. They should be able to help you find the services both your child and you will need.

I have a son recently diagnosed with Asperger's, and with the help of some awesome support teacher's at Cary High School is integrated with regular students and doing very well.

It is really stunning how many folks are in the situation you (and I) are in. It is great to see how having properly trained people can make such a difference. There is lot's of help out there, but it can be frustrating to find the right ones. Every kid is different, so I hope you can find the right help.
