I am getting conflicting reports on the internet. So I figure I'd ask people who actually live/know about the state.

When does the snow usually melt around Rapid City? I was hoping to move out there around march, but if it's still bitter cold and snowy then I'll have to wait a bit.

We can get our worst and heaviest snows in March and April. The temperatures are warming up so the snows are at times short lived.

The reason the reports you are getting on the internet are conflicting is because there is no good answer to that question. If you are wanting to live in SD, you are going to have to learn to roll with the punches when it comes to weather!

In March, there is still a good chance that it could decide to be freezing and snowing, or it could warm up and make everything a muddy, slushy mess. That's spring time in SD. Last year, my daughter hunted for Easter eggs in the snow. Today, it's 45 degrees. Unfortunately, there is no good generalization, and that is why you won't find a definitive answer. About the only months you are guaranteed not to see snow is July and August (we had snow on my birthday one year on Labor Day weekend!), and I wouldn't even put money on that!

Life is the way it is here, despite the weather, or maybe because of it! Yup, moving in the snow is no fun, but if it's necessary, you do it anyway. *shrugs*

Chances are, you will see snow in March and later. Most of the time it's a wet heavy snow because the temps are a little warmer. It normally doesn't last very long before melting and making a mess everywhere.

I don't think you'll see any bitter cold temps although it's possible.

Which is only like 55* warmer than 2 days ago. You will find the potential of 50* swings in any month in SD. Not to mention the shady side of town can hold the snow for several weeks longer than the sunny side. I'd say just go for it in March/April and cross your fingers it all works. Heck in May it could be flooding and in June it could be 99* and hailing out so really the weather is something you do the best with what is thrown at you, otherwise things could be postponed indefinitely.

That will be a sunny day indeed - regardless of the possibility of clouds.
