Hi--We are from Arizona and will be visiting Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills from May 22nd - May 29th. I realize the evenings will be cool, but am I going to freeze if I wear shorts during the day? In AZ, there usually is no wind and the humidity is low so if its in the upper 60's, low 70's shorts are usually fine. But I'm not sure about South Dakota as I have never visited. Suggestions?
I can only go out 7 days but will update as the week goes by. Here's what next Sunday and Monday look like.
Sunday
Partly sunny with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms. Highs 57 to 63.
Sunday Night
Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms. Lows 39 to 45.
Monday
Partly sunny with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. Highs 58 to 64.
This spring has been cooler than average. The norm is mid 60 to 70s. This year we are lucky if we have a 60 degree day. When we do it is usually followed by cold and rainy days. The lows have been at freezing or colder.
The weather here can change on a moment's notice, so you'll want to bring clothes for warm or cool days. Even if it's warm when you set out, keep a jacket in your car. Right now it's in the low 60s with a stiff wind, but it could be in the 50s or in the 80s when you visit.
Right now the forecast through Monday is windy with mostly low 60s/upper 50s for highs and 40s for lows with thunderstorms, possibly some strong ones. The storms tend to zoom in and zoom out... it is unlikely to rain the whole day. But keep that in mind if you're going to be spending the day outside.
The best thing I can tell you is - layers. We went to Wall Drug and there was ice on the trees. Three hours later we went to Mt. Rushmore, and it was warm enough for shorts and a tee shirt. When we got back to our motel, we got in the pool and jacuzzi - and when we went to supper, we were in pants and sweaters. The next day we went to the Mammoth site, it was dark, cool, and dreary and rainy - and when we came out it was snowing. We were lucky enough to find a snowplow to follow to get us most of the way out; several cars had spun out off of the road. We got back to Rapid and - the sun was out, and it was 50 degrees!
One of the 2 monikers that South Dakota goes by (one being the sunshine state) is the land of infinite variety. While somewhat consdering our state's diversity of sites what it really points to is our weather.

If you are wearing shorts and it is below freezing and you can't find shelter you will freeze unless you are jogging, then your body temp will stay high enough to keep from freezing. Also if it is cool and raining, that could put you in to hypothermia esp. if you aren't moving much and/or there is a constant wind. My suggestion is plan like it is AZ. then when you get here make some purchases according to our weather (which could be about anything in May) to help boost our economy and local shops!
OMG, I am going to freeze...lol...Thanks for the input everyone. I am definitely going to dress in layers and bring warm clothing.
