After that price range, you get into the all-in-ones like the Canon
PowerShot Pro1, or the Minolta DiMAGE 7i. Also, you are in the range of the
DSLR cameras, in which you buy the camera body and then buy the lens
(although most [some] DSLR's come with a kit lens). At that level, most folks are into photography enough to make their own decisions.
This is just an update on wide angle lens cameras as of today. Tomorrow it
will change. Such is the nature of electronics.
Greg,on July of 2006 I earned an e-Pro certificate, which is an accredited course, like the CRS certificate,it is very useful. It's also an online Realtor Community.Ask any questions from law to technology, you will get an answer from anywhere in the world from the realtors. This Camera news was on it. So I thought I'd share it. You might want to go into e-PRO to see if you want to get a certificate, this is a 6 months online course, you can finish it in 1 month. It took me a while. You will be well informed. Saul Klein should be happy that I am talking about it.
I just bought a new camera. I love it. It is the Sony Cybershot. has a nice size regular view finder, holds a ton of pics, and the battery life is amazing.

I will ask the e-Pro about that Sony to see how others think, sometime later, maybe Tuesday after the holiday
"I HAVE to use a tripod for simple shots because the image stabilization is horrible"
Sounds to me like you are in a very low light environment without a flash.
Rule of thumb-If it's so dark that a hand held static shot blurs-Then you definetly need a flash.

I have a mono pod and a Kodak v570. I love the dual lens for taking photos of skinny people and fat houses. If the house is too dark consider taking two photos - one with the window covers open and one closed - using photoshop you can superimpose one on the other and come up with a nice visable shot.
I am a certified epro trainer and use an awful lot of technology in my business. I, alsong a group of dedicated Realtors started one of the first computer learning labs at the local association.
The 5.0 megapixels are more than fine for the websites, virtual tours and brochure prints.
