The RE wants to get us pre-approved. I'm cool with that. But I don't know if THIS is the RE I want to use - I'm in my right to "interview" with Re's til I find one I trust correct?

Then if this RE gets us pre-approval letters - are we allowed to use those with whatever RE we choose??

You're allowed to do what ever you want, in regards to choosing a real este agent or interviewing many of them. Make sure you are honest with any & all that you "work with", so they know if you have chosen them to represent you or not. The worst thing is to act & be treated like you are working for someone, only to have them walk away saying, "well, I never signed anything".

And yes, the pre-approvals you get should be perfectly fine even if you don't use that real estate agent.

I suggest you interview several realtors and choose the one you want. Don't get your pre-approval until you choose your realtor. The realtor you choose may have a good mortgage broker to refer you to. You're not obligated to use that broker, but should interview that one among others.

There is one that I refer all the time because she is excellent. She will work hard to get the pre-approval as quickly as possible. If she does the loan she is on top of it every step of the way during escrow and communicates immediately to all concerned when there is a glitch, and works to get any hitches untangled right away.

That type of service prevents escrows from falling out due to not funding on time.

A pre-approval obligates you to nothing and no one. Not even to the mortgage broker or bank that you get your pre-approval from.

I cannot stress enough the importance of interviewing buyers agents. Interview at least three, if not more.

When you interview them - don't tell them too much. Let them tell you about the way they do business. Ask them how they would handle certain situations and try and determine their negotiating skills. Ask a lot of questions and you will find out if they are compatible with you.

Once you choose one to work with, if they ask you to sign a contract, make sure the contract has in it what you expect of them. That way, if they fail to represent you the way it states in the contract, you will have the ability to break the contract with them and work with someone else.

The interview process is very important. People do it when listing a home, buyers should do it as well.

And yes, you can take your Pre-Approval letter with you anywhere. Don't get more than one, as they can ding your credit.
