I would be nothing but upfront - I want them to be able to decide if they want to work with me or not. If the answer is "No", I would totally understand.

I did this about 15 years ago when I was anticipating a move to another state. In fact, I found the realtor on CD in that city's forum. They corresponded with me privately and provided some excellent information. About 18 months later when I was ready to move I used them as a buyer's broker.

They got both the purchase of the house I bought - and the sale when I moved.

You're going to tell an agent that you want him/her to escort you around Flagstaff but that you aren't going to buy anything for a year or two?

Good luck with that.

No. Go back and read my original post, you don't understand.

I have no intention of occupying their time in that manner. For the next year or two I'll check things out on my own when I'm there every month or two in order to understand the market, neighborhoods, and to determine where I want to be. I want to establish a relationship with an agent during that time so that when I'm ready to start shopping with the intent to purchase I've got someone I already know and trust to work with me.

I will probably have some questions about the area and various properties I see during the run-up. I would expect to be able to reach out via email or phone to them to address those questions. Beyond that I would to expect to interact with them at no more than a very low level until I'm ready to get boots on the ground and buy.

That could work.
