He still could have taken you to the party and introduced you as his "friend". Chances are his friends probably suspect he's gay, anyway. I had a few friends in college who were all secretive and stressed about being gay, and we all knew and didn't care.

Being out to his friends or not his last minute ditches are rude, annoying and signs of a selfish person. I would not want to date anyone like that. Im sure not being out to everyone does come into play quite a bit but its not an excuse to leave you hanging like that.
