It feels incredible to not NEED to have THINGS. Whenever I am staying at a hotel with friends and they start complaining about how small the tv is or how they don’t have a good view I can’t help but smile to myself. That sort of crap means nothing to me. I have a roof over my head, and food on my table.
I look at all the pain and suffering in the world and can’t believe how lucky I am. I work near Circular Quay in Sydney, and I like to go for walks on my own during my lunch hour, just to stand there to watch the ferries come in and see the sun shine off the water. It’s those sort of things that make me happy.

Oh absolutely I agree having determination and goals is not a negative trait, but NOT having them doesn’t make you a bum, either. That’s what I guess I am trying to say.

What makes me the happiest is travelling. I know that sounds funny considering how much money travelling costs, but if I could travel to a different destination once a year (even within my country!) for the rest of my life, I would be satisfied. I only need to go for a week or 2 so thankfully this doesn’t end up costing me too much money if I find a good deal.
I love meeting people and having people that care for me in my life. It makes me feel so lucky.
I love sex and sexual exploration. I want to experience a lot of different things on that front, and am slowly bringing the bf around to opening his mind a little more…
I have no desire to have a family so that is one good thing that suits my lifestyle. No one else to really think about supporting, but me.
Until, of course, you get old and run out of money. Then you'll rely on people to support you. And we're the people who sacrificed to raise the next generation of people who will pay for your pension check and likely take care of you in the retirement community. You're welcome.
That, is one aspect I think that some get wrapped up in. Work work work , slave to the grind so when you are 70 you can then have fun and go out and adventure? Maybe I'll regret it one day but I live for the now , I'm young, errr youngish.....what better time than NOW to suck up as much life and relish life NOW rather than waiting until you can't walk, or have sex or go away from the medical appointments too long?
I mean save, do without now for a supposed tomorrow , burn yourself out , and for all you know that 401 or savings or your plan goes poof!!! anyway? Personally I'll just deal with it as it comes and one way or another I'll adapt and do what I have to do at the moment.
Well, it's not really an either/or situation. Just don't spend every dime you make. Put it back for another day. Chances are, you'll never miss it.
But the problem with the last sentence of your post is that it never comes down to that. Somebody else will wind up paying.
You sure sound like a "tough cookie" to me! If you don't need much, that's your thing, but a lot of others like to make a nice salary so they can have a nice home, have a nice dinner out of seafood or steak, go on a nice vacation and so on. There are numerous employed people, earning a good salary, that care less about the economy and the unemployment rate......that's up to them! They go to Vegas and have a great weekend (or week) of gambling, shows, a nice hotel room and great meals. Do we wish we could do that......HECK YES!! Do we wish we could afford a full-size/30 foot/fully contained cabin cruiser...another HECK YES!! Do we wish we could afford a nice home along the beach and wake up to waves crashing up on the beach........again, HECK YES!!

I actually agree with you. But I look askance at the OP's distasteful argument. Because what it really is is a bit of self-aggrandizing about her own virtue, while all the rest are somehow morally inferior.

You remind me a lot of myself with that....a lot. I have this burning to travel the world and see and experience. I finally did that around most of the U.S.A in 2007 but I had a pocket full of money. It was a valuable experience for sure. But where there is a will there is a way, even if it means back packing and living meagerly in your travels, which I couldn't do, I would need to splurge a little. There is a certain comfort in "comforting" things like a decent bed, meal and air conditioning, clean decent clothes, or spending a few bucks drinking afterall.

We have these things in Australia called superannuation funds. Money from our wage is deducted and put into our Super Fund, for every week we work over our entire working life.
