I've never been tpo a Hooka lounge, but in the Middle East nargeela's (also called shisha) are very common in people's homes. We have one and so do my husband's parents, but we haven't used it; it's mostly for decoration.
Probably as satisfying or maybe less to a smoker as smoking an E-cigarette. At least the E-cigarettes have nicotine, while I'd guess the Hookah bars in the US are strictly herbal, without tobacco or nicotine.
I don't have one at home but it sure looks good as a decoration. I like the whole experience of sharing hookah with others and socializing and I enjoy different flavors of it.

Are you sharing with strangers or only with the people you are with?
No, just with my friends. It comes with little mouth pieces.
I was asking because Sierra mentioned improving a social life. I (but mostly my husband) feel that social life in the US revolves either around the young meat market mentality or family-oriented socializing. Where my husband is from, the social life is very rich and rewarding for the 35+ crowd (single or couples), that want adult recreation.
When you go one of those places, you don't have to smoke hookah. You can just drink or dance or socialize. I have some friends coming who never tried it and as far as I know, not planning on it. The smoke from hookah is much gentler than cigarette smoke.

Let me guess... Israel? I agree... social life needs improvement here, but we make the best of it as much as we can.
Hookah intrigues me somewhat, but as a lifelong, diehard, inveterate nonsmoker of any substance, whatsoever, I can't imagine a context where I'd actually try it/enjoy it.
You're still inhaling smoke, it may not feel as unsafe because it's so smooth but that's only because the water cools down the smoke. The water really doesn't filter much out.
e: That said, smoking it once a year is probably no worse for your than living in LA or Santiago, Chile.
