Bank of America: Currently, Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500) charges an $8.95 monthly maintenance fees on most checking accounts. But customers could get those charges waived if they make at least one direct payment each month or maintain a balance of $1,500.
That's really strange unless it's very recent... I don't keep more than $750 in the 2nd checking and I've never been charged a fee. Perhaps because the combined balance of the 2 accounts is always above $1,500.

It is recent and has only started to take effect. The first part of the info I posted stated they would have it done by the end of the year. But again, you can have the fee waived if any of your checks are direct deposited at least once a month.
"Similarly, Bank of America announced that by the end of the year it would restructure its checking accounts and implement new monthly fees, ranging from $8.95 to $25. And unless you analyze its four new checking offerings carefully to find the one that best fits your spending habits, you could end up paying anywhere between $100 and $300 extra in fees per year.
I have completely free checking - but I don't want to elaborate and jinx myself.

I don't have direct deposit, unfortunately. I guess I'll wait and see. They usually waive unexpected fees for the first time. I normally have way more in the other account, so I hope they don't get that petty and greedy.

I have direct deposit on one of my checks and the rest are done manually as I get them. I also have it set up with the bank's site a list of all my creditors who I pay every month and once a month go to that one page and insert how much I want them to have in the box, go down the list and hit 'done.' Takes less than 3 minutes to pay all my bills at once.
That's a bit interesting. I didn't know it got phone numbers.
That makes them a little more appealing.

Ugh!! BOA changed their checking accounts and now I'll have checking fees of $12 per month because my direct deposit per check won't be $250 or more. As a waitress, my base check will never be that much. Chase is the same. Any other ideas for a big bank that's got a good free checking?? Such a shame because I've been with BOA for many, many years. TIA
This is exactly what I was dealing with trying to set up a new account for my son while he's at college. All the major banks are restructuring their accounts and pretty much doing away with free checking unless you meet their minimums. I'm going to be leaving Suntrust - and I've been banking there for over 25 years. I meet their direct deposit requirement, but they also are implementing a fee for "unlimited access to your check card". So if I swipe my checking account card ANYwhere other than the ATM, even just once a month, I get hit with a $5 fee. Unbelievable.
