I moved to Seattle which is notoriously uppity/snobby/unfriendly. It's a well-known phenomenon called the "Seattle Chill". Oddly enough it caused me to be more friendly to break the ice, so to speak. Coming to such an anti social city has also caused me to be even more social.

Seattle of all places should be friendly. Then there's the places that are friendly to locals but not accepting of non-locals.
It can be contagious because who wants to smile at someone who is only going to frown back or look at you weird for a simple, friendly gesture? It could get to you at some point.

it's the same way on the roads. when everyone is courteous, it makes you want to be courteous to others. manners are contagious.
It is amazing at how much we rely on our environment to reflect who we are and influence our behavior. Most really care about what others think of them. So, in a warm and close knit area we find ourselves doing the same and likewise for a more distant crowd in another place.
I sort of think I am stuck with neighbors so I am polite but not overly friendly. I have opinions and likes and dislikes and they will not gel with just anyone. If I am too palsy with neighbors we could hit one of these brick walls which would hurt the relationship so I would rather keep my distance. I mean, I found out one neighbor imbibed too much - ugh! Another told me his son could spot a West Nile carrying mosquito - dumb and dumber. I don't know if he thought I was dumb or if he were really that dumb.
So I like to attend lectures and meetings and make friends there with a common interest and something going on upstairs.
I/we do intend to move to Manhattan to a place that ain't cheap. So we are hoping that most folks who will be neighbors have to have or have had a job that would justify a salary that would allow them to live in such a place. Or, they could be drug dealers or even worse, sometimes, entertainers. (she laughs)
I'm from downstate Illinois but I used to visit Chicago on a regularly basis while in college, and I always found the city to be incredibly friendly. In general, I just find people from Illinois to be a bit more friendly and open. When walking down the street, people look you in the face and nod or say hello.
I lived in Seattle where people would purposefully avoid making eye contact and if you said hello to someone on the street, they thought that you were insane.
But, I also say this as a brown skinned female, and I think this does have an impact on how I am treated.
I've heard white people complain about the Seattle freeze. Austin, Texas has the same problem plus racism.

Look New York City is a tough town...I'm not going to deny the obvious! However,I was there this summer (during the heat wave no less),and I was struggling to get my Metro Card to scan in the subway when a person came over and showed me how to do it! Also I was about to get on the wrong train and another person who had overheard me speaking to my daughter about our destination stopped me from doing so! I think alot about NYers is a stereotype!
