This is not to say that I think there is only one person on earth who can be your soul mate. I think you can have several.
A soul mate to me is someone who understands me, is my best friend, supports me, counsels and supports me, cares about me, loves me, has the same life values and goals as me, has chemistry with me and feels deep attraction to me. And I feel the same for him.
Yes and No. I think we need to be very careful of claiming a soulmate. I've mistaken a couple of different people as mine. Who were in reality people who I needed to be with to learn from, but not spend the rest of my life with them, those relationships were highly dysfunctional.
Today I am with someone that matches your description of a soulmate and I feel very fortunate to have found this person. If there is such a thing as a soulmate, I believe I have that. We are highly compatible and very passionate as well. I wish all people could have what we have.

I never thought my ex husband was my soul mate while we were together, but I wanted to be with him anyway, probably to learn from him like you said. I'm more aware of this now.

No. It's a lie that was fabricated by corporations to sell books, movies, diamonds, and that idea that everyone must particulate in the stereotypical "family life".
It's a very powerful lie because you could achieve many great things in life, but would still feel useless and inadequate because you did not not find "the one".
Edit: I DO believe that as we move down the path of life, different people who we are suppose to meet became available to us. This is how the saying," When the student is ready the teacher appears", came about.
