I can't say it's a survey but all the women I knew ranging from colleagues to casual acquaintances I have met in the bars all think that buff men are more desirable.
Must be true since most women talk about their men being able to provide them security and protect them. Height is one of the biggest turnon/turnoff to women because of the same reason, having muscles also falls into the same category.
Have you ever seen any power lifters? They are perhaps trying to be power lifters. A lot of power lifters have a paunch because they need a lot of fat to support such huge muscles.
Just because you go to the gym to attract women doesn't mean all the men who go to the gym have the same purpose, someone who can think about life beyond hitting on women all the time would understand this, I am not sure if you get this though.

No I am not heavy and not at all a power lifter but I certainly do have an idea about why they are the way they are.
