I felt like venting about this today. What do you do to handle a relative you live with that is more of a smug pest? The most vexatious characteristic of this person is his profound difficulty in accepting your experience as is, he likes to dig and probe with judgmental, suspicious, and insinuating questions while claiming to be supportive. The smug and suspicious "did you?" questions, "you should have" demands, and the unsolicited advice that he doesn't even follow are vapid and vacuous. This person is so vexatious that I see no other choice other than to avoid him which perplexes him: which has actually worked wonders on my behalf. Other vexatious characteristics include repeating self-ingratiating stories, complaints about scapegoats, and smug judgments over and over and over again, in addition to putting forth an ingratiating demeanor of omniscience and ingratiation which actually elicits even more vexation. Equally important to note is his ability to complain about a scapegoat that has made mistakes but then he will make those same mistakes and expect there to be no such judgments or criticism.

I'm venting. And it's less expensive to live with the vexatious pest. So I have to deal with it rather than take the easy way out.

Okay.

But to avoid having to deal with this and have anything to even vent about, why don't you just move?

Maybe it's less expensive to live with someone you know than split bills with a stranger.
