What is it about (relationship) labels that some people don't like?

I've heard people say, "I don't like putting labels on things" or "we don't need to label it," but I've never heard a good explanation as to why.

Is forgoing a label an "out" of some sort? Does it make the relationship less real? Does it mean it's not a relationship at all?

What makes some relationships label worthy and some not?

Are you one of the people who doesn't label? If so, why...

Standard labels might include: dating, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc. It's basically a definition of the relationship.

What are you on about? Labeling like what? An example of what kind of labeling you speak of will do wonders right now.

For example, a guy and girl talk every day, spend most of their time together getting close. One of them wonders, "what are we doing here?" The other says, "I don't like to label things; Why can't it just be what it is." blah blah blah.

Standard labels might include: dating, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc. It's basically a definition of the relationship.

Do you mean calling each other girl friend and boy friend? Husband and wife?

I think she is referring to the common practice among some these days of remaining non-committal when they've been together with someone a while. They don't want to refer to the girl or guy they've been with as their girlfriend/boyfriend.

Yes. I didn't realize it would be so difficult for people to understand. Perhaps it's not as prevalent as I thought.

(I gave an example above.)
