It's all about pheromones. I've been with women that are objectively really hot, but I was just not that into them. And the only way I've been able to explain it is despite their visually attractive characteristics, without the pheromones, my body just didn't respond in the same way.
Then I've been with women that might not be considered as attractive overall, compared to the rest but their pheromones are so intoxicating and addictive that I could not get enough of them and the sex was always phenomenal. In each of those situations when the relationship was over, I'm convinced I had come so use to their pheromones that in the absence of them, I was going through the equivalent of pheromone withdrawal related to their specific pheromones. It was almost like quitting a drug and the symptoms were probably similar to drug withdrawal. With one of them, a flight attendant, I use to literally overdose on her pheromones, licking every drop of sweat off her body after a four hour, marathon fest and I couldn't get enough of her. My tongue got to the point where it was on a seek and infiltrate covert ops mission to access any available point of entry on her body in a quest for more pheromones. It totally blew my mind at the time and I couldn't figure it out.
I guess in a way, that is what ultimately brings men and women together in what might be called 'love' or lust.

My last bf can go all day. He is 67 years old. I am NOT exaggerating. I knew this man when he was in his early 30's and he was the same then. The only difference between then and now is that he is just a teeny less hard because he's an old fart. He's still in beautiful shape though. As you can tell, I love this man!
50 seems way to young for that stuff, especially Alzheimers. Are you sure he's not dramatizing, or a hypochondriac, or something? People don't get Alzheimer's in their 50's, usually, or even 60's, AFAIK. Maybe it was a joke? Just because he can't find his keys from time to time doesn't mean he's getting Alzheimer's.
Last year, a college friend's wife passed away at 49 with Alzheimer's after years of declining health and dementia. I haven't researched as to whether it is hereditary but her father died from the same thing. Point is, yes, you can be afflicted much earlier than you think.
So many factors come into play. However, most men - speaking statistically - will start to slow down in their late 40s to late 50s. There are statistical outliers in both directions - the lackluster 20-something, and the horny 70-something. A great deal depends on health and fitness, some on genetics, etc. Even when it happens, there are now many ways to delay onset or delay declining drive and ability. I'm early 60s and still have sex daily or more. Having a great partner facilitates that, of course!
