In my opinion, a man is a male who demonstrates consistency of character (which happens to be my definition of soul). Someone who displays masculine traits (assssertive, aggressive, responsible, selfish) as intended at birth, someone who has a well defined set of morals and values and acts congruent with his beliefs.
Different behavior yielded different results 50 years ago or so. People will modify their behavior to get the results that they desire, most will not change behavior for some pie in the sky notion of what it means to be a "real man".
If a mans behavior is getting him jobs, dates and sex then he wont change it until it no longer works. The real question is (since this is a relationships forum), do women really want "real men", that will be determined by who they open up their sexualtiy too, the undesirable behavior will result in being friend zoned and men will stop behaving that way because no one wants to be friend zoned.
Also im sure there is a segment of men that have been effectivly removed from the dating market based on non-behavior based factors (looks, job, etc) so they see no benifit to being a nice guy to women anymore.
it is only the confused men who engage in this navel-gazing about "defining a real man." Men worthy of respect are busy living their lives, not coming up with stupid platitudes and theoretical concepts about how their gender ought to behave.
most of the comments in this thread are deserving of sharp rebuttals, but i'm not going to be the one to deliver them.

i pretty much say the same thing about women and feminism.
