I didn't mean that post seriously. It's just a play with statistics.
All you have to do is pay attention in a restaurant (even nice ones!) and see how many people are ignoring their SO and playing with their cell phones. I don't doubt for a second that most people would prefer their phone over being intimate with someone.
I went to a conference a few months ago and sat down for the opening session. These conferences are billed as educational and networking opportunities for my profession. After I sat down I looked to the front of the room, then the left, then the right, and then behind me. Seemed like everyone was on a smartphone or tablet. So I started looking at people in the first row, one-by-one, trying to find anyone who wasn't "plugged in."
Eventually I found one man... across the room from me. He was doing the same as I was, looking for anyone not on a smartphone or tablet. When we saw each other we waved vigorously and laughed (no one in the room noticed).

On a side note, I also heard on the radio a few weeks ago (on my way to work) that they are finding teens and young adults have more social issues than ever before. They are having a hard time socializing and relating to their peers or anyone else in face-to-face situations. They speculate being plugged in and not practicing face-to-face social skills could be a major part of that reason. I wonder if that's why we see so many posts of angst from younger folk (20s and under) here complaining about not being able to date, find dates, etc. If a lot of their generation is already having general issues with socialization... dating and meeting people to date (which is more intense socialization) would be even more difficult for them. It's an interesting thing to think about.

NYT had recent op-ed piece where they mentioned this film ("Her" by Spike Jonze,
about a guy who has an emotional connection with his computer's operating system or something like that),
and claimed that while a few years ago, our culture was into "hookups " (sex w/o romance/emotional involvement),
now it's into "soul mate in a box" (emotional involvement with someone you've never met in person, so there's no chance of being physical). http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/09/su...ms-length.html
I don't know if that is true (a valid trend), but is an interesting notion/interpretation.
