I stumbled across the following research:

Quote:
A study published in 2010 found that if only one partner smoked, it caused more marital problems than differing religions, different backgrounds, even different plans for having children.

Couples are an astonishing 76-95% more likely to get divorced if only one of them smokes. The amount increases when the wife is the partner with the habit. While couples who both smoke have it a bit better, a 1998 study found they are still 53% more likely than non-smoking couples to end their marriage.

The study can be seen here: http://cbe.anu.edu.au/research/paper...pers/DP631.pdf

I cant imagine a scenario where people would even bother to get married if one was a smoker and the other a non smoker.

Im a non smoker and smoking is an absolute deal breaker not just for a wife but also for a girlfriend and in most cases a potential one night stand candidate. Smoking is just that disgusting to me.

If she was a smoker before the relationship started the guy should never have married her. If she picked up the habit after marriage, likely he drove her to it. Wouldn't you agree, girls?

If there are kids involved it turns bad, really fast. A non-smoker cannot live with a smoker.

It like any other issue. It starts off small and grows in to a larger one.

"I only smoke outside and only occasionally"

6 months later

"I'm smoking almost a pack a day and go outside but leave the door open when I do"

I will not seriously date or marry a smoker. It costs so much money and leads to terrible health problems that will only create sadness later in life.

Nothing good comes of it.

What if they both smoked when they married and then one quit smoking later?

Don't date a smoker

If a partner starts the habit later in the relationship, it should be addressed immediately.

Well, smoking is more an indicator or less education and lower economic strata, so I wonder if this is just a correlation more than a causation.

I think living in a western country trumps smoking.
