I don't think we picked up hobbies, but rather expanded our interest in things we were already curious about due to having known each other.
I always found classic cars pretty interesting, but I didn't know ANYONE who was into that kind of stuff. All I knew was that I had always thought my grandmother's 1970s Nova was pretty awesome. My ex was always a reader, but he never had a direction with his reading - he would hear about a book and read it, and the overall effect was very scattershot. A few bestsellers, a few classics (but he didn't even know the difference between abridged and unabridged), and maybe whatever had an interesting cover.
So when I met him, I started going to car shows with him, and he would tell me about the different cars and custom work that had been done on them. I found it all fascinating - still do. And as he accompanied me to bookstores and libraries, he began to get a stronger sense of what periods of history interested him, what genres of fiction he enjoyed and which essayists and humor writers really spoke to or entertained him.

It was the first thing that came to mind when asked what I got hooked on during a relationship. It's the only thing he gave me that made a lasting impression. I don't glorify substance abuse and there may be young, impressionable kids out there reading this, so I'd rather not name the product or state the manner in which I use it.
