Discuss. Is a bad credit score a dealbreaker for you if you have a good one?

No, because I have no intention of legally entangling myself with anyone.

Too broad of a question.

How good is good?
How bad is bad?

How old are the people?
Why is the bad one bad? As an example, anyone young has a bad score, until they build it up.

And a deal breaker for what? Dating? Marriage?

I cannot see this coming up during dinner.

"So, what do you like to do for fun and what's your credit score?"

Not a dealbreaker. I'd recognize that that facet may not be one of her strengths, but not a dealbreaker.

I want to know how you would find out what your potential "mate" 's credit score is.

The people are mid-30's but I feel at that point in your life you should have your finances in order.

I also understand that just bc someone has a bad credit score doesnt mean they are irresponsible. Sometimes things happen that are beyond one's control, but still.

I am not sure how I feel on the matter but my credit is near perfect.

If it is part of a pattern of fiscal irresponsibility, then definitely a dealbreaker.

Now, if the person understands/can explain why their credit score is bad and has formed and implemented a workable plan for improving it then I don't necessarily see that as a dealbreaker, although I would definitely wait and see if they are sincere about changing things before getting serious.

But if the person doesn't think it's important or doesn't understand what happened and what they need to do to fix it, the person who has the good credit score is in for a lifetime of headaches and frustration at not being able to achieve their long-term goals.

it affects you only if you are gonna do long term like marriage

you cant assume that someones credit is bad because they are "irresponsible"

someone could have lost a job or something where bills didnt get paid etc

people who filed bankruptcy in the past (who may have been irresponsible) can have good credit now

so basically it doesnt mean much

what you should look at is how they view and handle finances

I think your knowing a potential partners credit score is an enormous deal; if you really feel that it's necessary than you're a horrible person to build a relationship with and that's important to know before it's too late.

If you're someone who factors in a significant others financial condition, dental health, family or class standing or anything else outside of how they make you feel when you're with them, let them know you're shallow up front so they understand who they're dealing with.
