My texts will usually be slow, as I enjoy my day and do whatever it is I am doing, and fit them in someplace, until I stop replying all together for the day.
It depends on the subject matter and the person. A combination of the two.
If it's just chit chat and I'm not very much into the person, I could text back a few hours later.
If it's an important matter/person I'm interested in, immediately.
I once dated someone who would literally reply 10 seconds after their received my texts. ALL the time. I thought "Great, he's into me". Not so fast little dolphin! When he didn't get sex on the 3rd date, I texted him after to thank him. He responded about an hour later. I tried texting him the following day, he never replied! He didn't even replied to the birthday greetings I sent him 3 days later.
You can definitely gauge someone's interested based on the text response speed.
Do you wait or do you respond immediately just to check it off your to-do list?
Depends on the who, what, why, where, and when of the text.
[but I usually respond within a few hours]
