I wonder if maybe the grind of full-time work and full-time study isn't getting to him. Not that he was ever the happy, bubbly type before...

Be proud of yourself, Diss! Two more years, you'll be done, and your hard work will pay off. Not everyone has the strength to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps like you, and from an early age. Get yourself a massage on the weekend. You'll be surprised how your mood changes, and you feel better afterwards.

And let us not forget that chivalry isn't a requirement. When I was dating, I probably didn't notice when a guy didn't make a point to open doors for me or help me on with my jacket - rather I noticed when he did do those things. And it was nice. Sometimes the absence of nice behavior isn't bad behavior - it just isn't noticeable behavior.

Some of these points on the list are common courtesy, some a bit ridiculous.

Holding a door open doesn't compare to standing up for women when the leave/enter the room. If you are Leopold and dating Kate, great, but otherwise you look like a doormat.

In today's age pulling a chair out or opening and holding car door are optional IMO, but are good "extra credit points"

Some of those would be completely out of place these days but others are simply good manners and I do them to both men and women. I hold the door to another man if he's coming after me, I give up my seat to an old man, I take friends home after a night out and wait to make sure they get inside, etc.

Then maybe you need a break from this forum, it seems to be irritating you a bit too much.

Turnabout is fair play.

The thinly-veiled anger I'm receiving here is evidence of exactly what I was talking about downthread:

That women want to be free if their gender roles, but want men to stay in theirs.

A "lady", in the context of this discussion, is the female parallel to gentleman; that is, a refined person who meets the norms and expectations of polite society.

Women didn't march and fight to throw off the "oppressive bonds" of politeness and courtesy. The marches were not about gender roles. Women marched and fought for equal rights and protection under US law.

By the way, the Equal Rights Amendment was never successfully passed.

I agree - but the only people that will understand this already understand it and those that don't understand this simply don't want to.

There are people who believe that a lady is the one who cooks, cleans, does the laundry, etc. Just like women support the idea that a gentleman is the one who opens a woman's door, pulls her chair, pays for her expenses, stands up when she enters/leaves the room, etc.

It seems you support those old traditional values, right?

Do you want to understand the problems that men face in modern America?

No, you don't.

Let's just shout at each other instead.
