Nope. It hurts - like when someone shakes your hand but is unaware how tight their grip is so they grind your metacarpal bones together and the pain shoots up your wrist. Does that make sense? So does carpal tunnel cause numbness? Sometimes the pain is so sudden and intense I drop whatever I'm holding.
Swelling inside of your wrist from overextending or repetitive motion puts pressure on your median nerve, the one going from your wrist to your hand on the palm side. It directly affects your thumb. I used to get numbness from it, both hands, but worse in the right. It also presents as pain. The uncomfortable tingling would wake me up at night. It went away after I left my job that involved being tied to a desk inside of cubicle for up to 14 hours a day, typing, tired, insufficient breaks.
Maybe you're doing a lot more keyboarding now that your back in school? It isn't always necessary to have surgery.

I was in a grubby little BBQ joint last night, washing up in the ladies room, and I turned to get a paper towel to dry my hands and started waving my hand under the towel holder, thinking it was one of those automatic "touch free" jobs.
No towel.
So I start waving my hand all around the thing like I'm swatting flies ... in front of it, over top of it, underneath again. Then I noticed that it was a newfangled old-fashioned version where you push the lever a couple of times to get a towel out.
Meanwhile, my hands are dry because I've just stood there waving them all around the bathroom for 5 minutes.
