Not here, know several six figure earning financially stable people without cars. They just don't want or need them. I wouldn't have one except I have to be at a secondary office a couple of times a week that is off of public transit lines. Cars are expensive and a total PITA. Or they'e had drinking and driving "difficulties" or no license for other reasons. I don't mind driving, I'd rather meet someplace "just in case" I need to leave, alone. Uber or a cab is a great convenience, if I think I'll have a couple of drinks or more. As far as later in a relationship-- if I was the one always having to drive to the other person's place? Fine, then I don't have to clean and vacuum, and all the other things I run around doing neurotically before someone comes over
Hypothetical question:
Say you are seeing someone...and only one of you has a vehicle. In this case, it's the guy who drives, the woman is bereft of wheels. Now, the guy drives to see her frequently. Both live a considerably short distance from each other, with adequate public transportation (bus) in between.
Now, the woman says she wants to spend time with the guy; the guy can't always get over there, but [he] suggests that she take the bus to his place. She refuses, although she is familiar with the bus - as stated, she doesn't drive. Wouldn't this be considered selfish on her part if she refuses to go to his place, rather than his driving there all the time?
Not selfish...bizarre. If she takes public transportation to work, to visit friends, to go out at night, to various appointments, why wouldn't she take it to see her guy?
This made up scenario makes no sense at all.
If it's real, is this another one of those mentally challenged women you like to date? Because this is not normal behaviour.

Even in Los Angeles, the second largest city, you can't get around without a car. I'm aware of the high cost of owning a vehicle, that's why I am not a big fan of luxury cars.
Private transportation is just a necessity in most cities, a friend of mine tried motorcycle since it's cheaper. The bottom line is, you can't rely on public transportation.
By the way, a significant part of your vacation savings will probably be spent on car rental and gas.

No, I have never been to New England. Okay, let's suppose Boston is another exception. It doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of U.S cities do not have reliable public transportation.

Boston. Heck, some of the partners I knew when I worked at a big four accounting company in Boston didn't have one. I know at least a half a dozen well compensated lawyers and tenured professors here that don't have them or want them.
And no it isn't the only exception. I know plenty of financially well off people without cars in SF too. one. I got rid of mine after moving there as I never used it. Tons of tech / start up workers there don't have them.
I rarely rent cars when on vacation when doing international travel. Actually, I never have. Ever. I only rent a car when visiting more rural places in the U.S.
Los Angeles is well known for being very spread out and having crappy public transit.
