A record number of Americans, particularly a lot of young men aren't having sex.

- 23% of 18-29 year olds have had no sex in the past year (compared to 14% back in 1989)

- For men that figure is 28%, for women it is 18%. Both up from 15%/13% respectively back in the 90s/00s.

- 27% of men under 30 have had no sex partners since turning 18 (in effect a virginity question), up from 7% back in 1989.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/gdpr-...=.1805637fb878

It is worth noting that there are more people still living with their parents than ever before and so not surprisingly there is a strong correlation between this and their subsequent sex lives.

The number of male virgins has also risen dramatically. The CDC reported back in 2008 that by age 40 only 1.2% of men remained virgins, and just 0.3% of women. I'd say if that study was carried out again in the next 10-15 years the new numbers would blow those out of the water.

I always laugh when I hear people talking about young folks not getting laid, as an item of concern. When I was young they were telling us NOT to have sex. And hell, I'm pretty sure abstinence only sex ed is still alive and well in a great many school districts so what in the hell does anybody expect, if that's what we are teaching kids, that sex is terrible and dangerous and will surely get you a disease, or a pregnancy you cannot afford to deal with, etc. Really now! What do we expect?? lol

But the gendered difference...

I know a lot of young males in particular (some girls too, but less of them) who seem to be delaying growing up. I know men in their 30's who are obsessed with some form, or several forms, of gaming to the point that their lives revolve around it. And I'm sorry but part of growing up is becoming capable of surviving and succeeding in the real world. So many electronic distractions exist now to satisfy every urge a young man might have, and that have the power to addict him. The objective/work/reward cycle of a game, or the click-click-boom of porn. It is also a trend that young people are not as motivated to learn to drive as they used to be. And school funding has been cut so they don't have driver's ed in school anymore. They just don't seem motivated to act like adults, to make solid plans and do the work to accomplish them in real life.

Girls have the option of hooking up with older guys who might be further along on the path where this is concerned. Said older guys are perfectly happy to be with a very young woman. To the point they'll sometimes forgive that she isn't charging forward into college and career with both barrels blazing. If they can afford to, they'll support her.

Boys don't really have this option. No older cougar wants much more than a little fun if that, they sure aren't looking to take on a young male dependent.

During the 5 months of 2015 when I was on OK Cupid, the most common age of man to message me was 27. I was 36 at the time. I rejected all of the young guys in their 20's but they were many, and I got the feeling they were not having the best luck.

Young men struggling with this kind of thing...if they haven't, they should get driving, get a car, get a job, and get some kind of trade training or college so they can make more than minimum wage, and definitely move out of your parents' house. 'Cause I think a lot of these fellas are behind the curve, compared to previous generations, and that's a big part of what's going on here.

So, online dating services and hook-ups aren't working? ...
Maybe those unfortunate need to change their strategies? Try the old fashioned ways, perhaps? Learn how to socialize with real people (face to face vs gadget to gadget) and those who live nearby?

36 and no sex for the past three years. By choice, however.

My other good friend is my same age and it's been five years for him.

I know we aren't the demographic of the study but I wish there was data for our age group as well. I'm curious how common it is.

There is, from the study (second graph):

You're amongst 7% of your age group, the least common.

Have you considered this "increase" is partly due to the increasing number of people in the population since the 1980s and due to more people having better access to these types of surveys compared to back then?

Cool! One of the reasons I wanted to do it was it doesn't seem like something most people do. I was aiming to have a totally unique life experience.

My friend isn't really by choice. He just hasn't come across anyone he's attracted to.

Ha , that's exactly the first thing l thought too.
Read anything anywhere about meeting people or this dating crap and it's always OLD , or that damn swiping right or left thing.
So many would've grown up in their bedrooms too these days , thinking fb and all the chat things and such easy to get porn , are a real life.
