Yeah, this is why besides not being mentally into the idea of hookups I would never use Grindr or any other similar app for hookups. I feel like its actually crazy that inviting complete random strangers into your bed before meeting and knowing nothing about them is as commonplace as it is.
I know one friend who's hookup stole his car on the way out and another friend who went to meet up with someone and found himself in a crack house.
I'm plenty okay meeting up with people the first time in public places and doing my best to weed them out with at least a few days of messaging and trying to verify they are a real person beforehand. That's risk enough for me.
Online dating and apps have always had an element of danger to them because you know nothing about the person you are meeting. Back in the day when it was more common to meet through mutual friends or at college, you at least had a sense of the type of person you were meeting (although there are never any guarantees).
As others have said, meet in a public place, in the daytime. Never get “picked up or dropped off” at the first meeting.
