I can understand why people would be worried about disease, but if you look at statistics regarding prostitution in North America and Europe the chances of catching an STD are pretty low. HIV transmission is very high in the homosexual community and among needle-users, not really among prostitutes. Research has also indicated that most prostitutes in North America do use protection.
By comparison, how many times have you picked up or gone home with someone whom you didn't know or at least know very well and not used protection? I'm willing to bet that it's higher than any of you would care to admit. STD rates are higher amongst young people for this reason - a good many aren't wrapping it up when being promiscuous and often there is chemical inebriation involved which assists the lapse in judgement. Most "professional" women just aren't going to allow that.
I guess it would really depend on what kind of prostitute your husband or boyfriend is seeing - high-class escorts of the Charlie Sheen and Elliot Spitzer category or the homeless junkie trolling around in alleyways? The junkie variety is not appealing at all - those of you who live in larger cities have certainly come in close-range of one and know that they are not sexually appealing at all. The internet escort or agency girl has a much higher tendency to be clean and use protection, even during oral sex. Just do the research, it's all out there.
But really - what's a man to do when he's been single all of his life and with no children? Picking up women is not that easy nor is it guaranteed to work any time you want some companionship. It's also misleading to pick up women in social settings for the sole purpose of sex, it has a tendency to mess with people's emotions and make them feel used. It's all-around just not good. How would you feel if you met a man who later confessed or you discovered to be "a player"?
So then wouldn't you appreciate a man who knew what he wanted and went to a professional who was probably safer than picking up some girl in a bar?

I don't see the problem with it, as long as she wasn't one of those child slave/teen hookers. Oh well, sh*t happens maybe he couldn't get women normally.
I don't know what to say. My soon-to-be ex husband did alot of things in his past that he told me about voluntarily (drugs, cheated on his first wife, etc.). I took the stance that, hey, it's in his past and married him anyways. But as it turned out, he didn't tell me everything (including having sex with prostitutes). In the end, he cheated on me with prostitutes - and started using drugs again. So on the one hand, I want to be hopeful and say that you should not hold someone's past against them, especially if they are upfront about it, but I got burned by that one...
I almost married my high school boyfriend until he spent all the money I had saved on strippers and prostitutes. Real classy.
This guy may have matured and not have further encounters, but I would be wary. I wouldn't break up, but just have more awareness about it.
