Where you live and whether alcohol is included makes every difference in the world.
For an example, a friend from a rural state came to visit me for a couple days. I took him out to dinner, my treat and so I selected a place that was kind of cool, fun & neat look to it, and the price for entrees hovered around $15 - $20 each. Seems reasonable and not "expensive" right? Well we each drank 3 Grey Goose martinis. I swear to all non-New Yorkers I am not making this up: when the bill came, those drinks were $20.00 EACH. Final bill was $36.00 for food, $120.00 for vodka. I fought back the tears as I reached for my wallet.
Dinner is one thing, but liquor/wine makes or breaks the final cost.
Oh, OUCH. I don't drink at home, and this is why I rarely drink when I go out (which is also rare). I hate spending $8 or more on ONE drink. And the little cocktail menus often don't have prices.
I consider this a good test for whether I want to date a girl or not. If she cares about how much I spend on dinner, I don't want to date her. The end.

I agree. Liquor is ridiculously expensive in New York City. You can spend hundreds of dollars on drinks alone. If you go to a nice lounge in a city and sit down (meaning reserve a table, not standing at the bar) and order a bottle of expensive vodka + the food, your bill can run up to $300.00 at times.

Whatever happened to "Put your best foot forward" as a dating strategy?
Because you put your best foot forward to impress someone you are interested in not someone who may not even want to date... this applies more to online dating where you have not yet seen the person, so first offline meeting is just to establish whether you want to date or not.
