Great question! This is something that makes me shake my head in disbelief; they don't tell b'c they're worried about the news a resulting test could bring so instead of applying common sense--get the test and cure the problem before it reaches the incurable/irreversible stage--they pretend it isn't happening. Wtf?
I have my annual check-up and to the dentist for cleaning every 3 months. Other than that I don't need to go to the doctor more often (hope it stays that way).

That is very reasonable.
I am talking about someone who just wont go.
Has an actual medical condition and it now has added complications.
My dad used to go every three months because he had a heart condition.
He had to go much more often than that for labs as he was on a blood thinner.
He did pass from cancer. He had a sore on his neck that was not healing up and he did not have it checked out until I begged him. Wasn't time to go to the dr, he said.
He ended up having colon cancer and after that he had lymphoma.
I lost him when I was twenty. He lived until he was 73.
My brother did this. He had a lump on his neck and waited til it was stage 3 (out of 4) to get it checked. The doctor, six months ago, gave him two years to live without chemo. If he'd gone as soon as he felt it, it could have been removed and never reached stage 2.
Sounds like my Uncle. He died young because he refused to go to the doctor for the "stomach flu". He preferred to put up with it bugging him consistantly for a couple of years and was convinced he could make it go away with a macrobiotic/whole foods diet so he started that instead of just making a simple appointment. By the time his mother and sisters and brother had nagged him into seeing a doctor there wasn't a whole lot they could do with the cancer. It was too far advanced. Guy was 38 when he died of a "curable" cancer.
Pikantari, I think they don't go because initially they underestimate or downplay what the problem could be, they feel it's weak to need help and they think they can "fix it" themselves, supposing they acknowledge something is actually happening in the first place. I like to point out that it's far more manly to go have the check up and perform maintenance than it will ever be having your family spoon feed you, carry you, help you dress and watch you die because of some stupid machismo.
Ive gone to the doctor only once than I can remember within the past 9-10 years. This was after I severely rolled my ankle while playing basketball. I still didnt go until the next day when my wife made me go because I couldnt put any weight on it. Went in, they x-rayed it, told me to take some tylenol and sent me home.
I should have just put some of my DMSO and chinese bruise linament on it instead of wasting my time by going to the doctor.
I totally agree. Women go to the doctors office just waaaaaay too much. If I break something, I'll go to urgent care or to the ER.
One thing I do though is visit my dentist for cleanings twice per year.
Now now....let's be careful there. I despise going to the doctor - I hate having to take time off, and for silly things like colds and sore throats, it's a waste of time and money. HOWEVER, I believe everyone should get an annual physical. Keeping tabs on things like cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, body fat%, can only serve to help you help yourself.
My health insurance covers the full cost of my physicals, and I think that most plans do. If you don't have insurance, there are less expensive options to explore. Preventative medicine is one of the best ways to get and stay healthy. That should be a priority for everyone.

Wow....I'm shocked! I figured you of all people would at least go for annual checkups.
I went to the doctor about 8 years ago to look at a lump on my shoulder. They took a tissue sample for testing. It turned out everything was fine, and it was just a form of scar tissue. They told me if it came back they would give me medication to make it go away. But I never bothered to go back; I saw no point.
I do go to the dentist twice a year for cleanings. (My first visit to the dentist didn't happen until I was 16, and I had no cavities. But haven't been quite so lucky since.)
