Well, I have not heard from him but 2 of their sons are here and they are talking about it now...sounds like it is pretty bad...
Those poor kids. Perhaps if she won't get out for her own sake she'll get out for her children. That might be a good way to broach the subject. Most mothers will do anything to protect their children.
It is shocking because she seems so strong and independent and I never thought someone like her could have something like this going on in their home but I am obviously wrong...this will make me look at people differently!
I don't know what you can do for your friend, but it doesn't sound like he's being abusive, it sounds like he has literally gone NUTS! She should take the kids and RUN, get a restraining order against him and leave town.
Sounds like he may have knocked someone up on the side and now they are either ready to "out" him to his wife and/or sue for child support. If not pregnant, then it has all the makings of an affair that has gone bad.

Yep, apparently just drove out to the country, stopped and let the dogs out and left...
I am not a mental health professional but it makes me wonder if he has some sort of psychotic break or something...
I wonder if he's bi-polar or a mild schizophrenic and off his meds? That was my first thought.
