Human development is a lifelong process, throughout this process individuals must resolve various psychological conflicts that are based on how they interact with others in their social setting. Following changes associated with transition into middle adulthood (the period between ages 40 and 45) the supposedly ‘mid life crisis.” The term ‘mid life crisis’ is a popular media theme used to explain why men in this age groups may dress to appear younger than they are, purchase flashy red sports cars, date women 20 years younger or use the vernacular used by young people.
What is “mid life crisis”? Is it possible to get through middle adulthood without experiencing crisis either in mid life or at the age 50 transition? Do women experience mid life crisis? Is mid life crisis a desirable phase men and/or women want to experience in this phase of their developmental transition?

I've always had sports cars, as well as motorcycles and a fully stocked bar so I won't have to do anything when the crisis hits. Maybe it already happened.

Many do but I think most wouldn't fall into the crisis mode. At 40 you typically stop and take inventory of your life. Take stock of where you've been and where you are headed professionally and personally. Questioning choices you've made, re-evaluating personal relationships, pondering whether or not you made the right commitments in life in work, love, and friendships.

For some that's a fleeting moment, for others, they hold onto it a little longer and may find themselves at a crossroads or looking to change the course of their life. Accomplish something that haven't yet finished or even started. On average I'd say 40 is the halfway mark, it's middle aged, and so long as you are healthy and active you can still pursue all your goals and enjoy everything you did when you were 30 or younger.

It's not so much a crisis than a "what did I do with my life and why did this happen and why didn't this happen.."

It's a chance to review your life progress and see how you can change things, adapt to how life is or just try something new because you realize that maybe your life is not going the way you thought or wanted.

I think if you have other problems in your life in your 40s (like unemployment or illness) you may react or be 'in crisis' than if you have a good job, nice relationship with someone or no real problems.

At age 44 (20 years ago) I was told by doctors that I probably wouldn't survive an upcoming surgery, and if I did, I likely wouldn't live long after it. When I overcame the problem I did some serious soul searching and made some major changes in my life, the biggest being a divorce from a woman who didn't care whether I lived or died.

I guess that could be called a "midlife crisis." I took stock in what my life had become and questioned if it was how I wanted to spend the rest of my life, then made changes.
