I have been reading a lot about the Unitarian Universalist Church. Can anyone share a personal expereince about being a part of this "thinking." Thanks!
I went to a UU service a couple of months ago. I rather liked it. There is no dogma, and I was made to feel welcome even as an atheist. There were several other atheists there. World peace is their main goal; that's hard to argue with. It was more like a philosophy club meeting than a church service. I don't know whether all UU churches are alike, but this one was quite pleasing.
The UU churches I have been to (we attended one regularly for years and have visited several others) definitely felt like church, in that the format was similar to what I've experienced in Protestant churches with a "low church" style--call to worship, hymns, scripture readings, joys and concerns, sermon. Now, in the UU church, the words of the hymns have frequently been altered and the scripture readings might be from the Koran or Buddhist writings.
My husband loved the church and ended up joining. I needed a little larger dose of Christianity, so I attended a UCC church once or twice a month and the UU church the other Sundays.
I went to the Unitarian church in Portland, OR and enjoyed it. Seemed uplifting, no hellfire and damnation crap. They would bring in other religions, i.e. once a Tibetan Monk to speak, and liked that. Felt very comfortable, friendly people, coffee and donuts a plus!!
Thank you everyone, for sharing. We don't have a UU church anywhere around where we live, but it sounds exactly like the kind of place I'm looking for.
Yes, that is Unity. Another denomination which could be similar is Science of Mind, founder is Ernest Holmes. Maybe more metaphysical.
