Infact...most of the racism in the 40's, 50's and 60's were pushed and originated from the pulpit...from Pastors in the South...
Jerry Falwell being one of them...
Now the question I have is...if these men claim to speak for god...and know the mind of god...why do they change their minds with the time??
If Jerry Falwell was a strict segrigationist in the 50's and 60's...why did he stop being one in the 80's and 90's if indeed he was a man of god?
Why would God be a segrigationist and racist in 1950, and not be one in 2001??
Why would God change his mind so quickly?
If God was a racist and segrigationist in 1950, he would still be one today...
But if Jerry Falwell and other southern ministers 'changed their views' to keep with modern times...than what spirit were they following in the 1950's and 60's??
Kind of goes back to my point that no one knows god, people only know self and culture and own self interest...and simply call that 'god'...
If God is never wrong and never errors, than how can the men who serve him, pastors, radically adjust their belief system only when they see the social tide turning?
If these Pastors, men, ever knew God, than they would of been on the right side from the beggining...not just when society changed, and it would begin to hurt their pocket book...
Why indeed. I felt no sense of loss or sadness when I heard the news of Jerry Falwell's passing. He offended many people with his bigotry down through the years of his life.
Get over yourself. If he repented for his sins, I have nothing against the man and wish him the best in life. And I'm african-american. I'm sure there are plenty of racist that have made it to Heaven and have opened their eyes to their ignorance once there. Heaven is a place for everyone who is repentant and surrender their hearts and lives to Jesus Christ. Doesn't matter what their past is like.

'Get over myself'
Obviously you failed to see the larger point to the post...It didn't have so much to do with Farwell, as it did 'people who claim to know or follow God'...
Well its not much different from the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa as they were staunch supporters of Apartheid and every prime minister during apartheid were members of it, however at the end of Aparheid their support for it largely ended.

Excellent illustration in keeping with the theme of this thread...
Your totally right about that...
It seems to me, God never changes, but man, is a constant revolving door of ideas and ideologies.
The only reason why the Nazis are not still here, is because Hitler never 'diefied' the movement...
Had Hitler 'diefied' the movement...somehow connected Nazism to 'the will of God'...it would still be here today, like Islam.
Because Hitler never did that, it was easy for people to see the falicy in it.
In his autobiography, Malcolm X categorically stated that, based on his personal experiences, racism was just as alive and just as bad in the northern and midwestern states as it was in the South. Again according to him, at least the Southerners were honest about it, while the Northerners weren't (saying one thing while doing the opposite).
If you folks want to keep trying to shove all racism down into the South, that's fine. Each time you do it, you strengthen Malcolm X's assertion.
Just my two-hundreths of a dollar,
