I grew up in a Christian home; however, my Mom was one of those Christians that actually followed the words of Jesus and not just what she heard in church. Because of my upbringing, I still have respect for TRUE Christianity (if practiced the right way) even though I am no longer religious.

But stories like this do confuse me and makes me wonder what's the point of going to church. From my experiences, church people seem more hateful and close-minded than non-religious people (which is strange because Jesus preached a message of love, peace, frugality, humility, and supporting the poor). Can anyone explain to me the "Southern Baptist" religion and this article about a MS church "banning black marriages"? It seems like these people are hell-bent on continuing to embarrass the South (which is already the laughingstock of this nation LOL) and real Christians in general.

Bigotry and racism is alive and doing well in the southern baptist sect.

After all it was only in 1995 that the Southern Baptist Convention adopted a resolution apologizing for once supporting American slavery, the vile practice which actually created the religious organization in the first place.

Sounds like racism exists in a church in Mississippi, which is in the Southern Baptist denomination.

Too bad those making a stink were not silenced by others, but it sounds like the church plans for that not to happen again. Some folks certainly owe the couple a huge apology, and they need to do some heavy soul searching.

This is not the entire denomination. It's one church.

I would not take this story very seriously.

A black couple wanted to get married in a certain church and, according to them, the church would not allow it. So they claim it was because they are black. Maybe if you asked the church members who were against the wedding, they would give a different reason.

Wasn't that long ago that the same demonstration of bigotry and racism played out in a church in KY. It is a systemic belief among southern baptists, which did split off solely over slavery and racism.

As believers in Jesus Christ, we who are the bride of Christ wait with great anticipation for the day when we will be united with our Bridegroom. Until then, we remain faithful to Him and say with all the redeemed of the Lord, “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).

Ummm...the WHITE pastor of the Church admitted that the members didn't want the couple to get married there because they are black. He said he didn't want to oppose their wishes because they might vote him out as pastor so he performed the ceremony at another location. Please read the entire story before you comment.

And that's why these southern baptists are bigoted racist Thanks for clearing that mystery up.

Yeah, I read that part. The pastor is making a comment about the motive of the members of the church. Any time one person tries to state the motive of someone else, I get very suspicious.

For example, right-wingnuts say people want welfare because they are lazy. *******s say people want voter identification because they are racists.

I would like to see the members of the church THEMSELVES state why they are against letting the one couple get married in their church.

Your example does not make any sense. The churchgoers TOLD the pastor that they they didn't want the couple to marry there because they are black. This is not the first time this has happened in a Southern Baptist church : Kentucky Church Bans Interracial Couples - ABC News
