The trouble with using the standards of evidence you (by all appearances) adhere to is that the discovery of the (previously thought to be mythical) city of Troy somehow validates the existence of all the gods contained in The Illiad.
It's written and parts are true, so it must all be true.
I've never said the existence of any one city means all of the Bible is true. But I am saying that when we compare the thousands of manuscripts we have of the Bible (and the average size is over 400 pages), and we take a deeper look at the text itself, it's clear that it isn't just some little book that some guy wrote a couple thousand years ago.
No, you say it because you believe your book's many, man, many, long-dead authors, editors and re-writers.
No...I believe it because it's true.
Having said that, the 66 books contained in it, along with the fact that they all connect together with a common message despite different authors and timetables is an amazing fact.

It is a book of fables, lies, deception, ignorance and bits of wisdom.

Actually, what you often say comes across that way. It's obvious that you don't hold your own book to the same standards of evidence that you do others.

Case in point. This is exactly how we feel about the Bible, yet you seem to have trouble grasping why.

Actually, you appear to believe because you WANT it to be true (and you have "faith" it is true, not unlike the practitioners of every other belief that exists and has existed).

When you take a whole bunch of books, pick out the ones that gel the best with the message you are trying to get across and then burn all the rest, there really isn't anything amazing about it at all. The fact that they're relatively contextually coherent is somewhat impressive, but I can say exactly the same of "The Iliad" or the Analects of Confucius as well.
