When the ancients were sitting around telling these stories, they didn't believe them any more than Aesop believed his fables. So it didn't matter if the stories had holes in them. They're weren't supposed to be historically or scientifically accurate.
You should put that on a Hallmark Christian Greeting Card - it's so.... sentimentally predictable. I was wondering when someone was going to misconstrue the question as an excuse to say something like this. Well done!
God could have very easily created several families that have a distinct genetic make-up. But, because the human authors of the Bible didn't have a clue about genetics and the risk of marrying one's sister, they thought they could have blood relatives marrying and having sex all the time without any consequences. This is just one more example of how we can tell that the Bible was not divinely inspired.
The genetic make-up of Adam and Eve would have been flawless. Therefore, no birth defect risks from reproducing within the family. This is why we have accounts of early man in the Bible living hundreds of years.
Why are you assuming that the Bible is a complete and detailed account?? The Old Testament is, for the most part, a summary of a summary of a summary. Genesis never said they didn't have other children. Genesis tends to leave out more details than it includes.
I think Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel and Seth are real people. I just think there is a ton of details that we're not being told about them and the world around them.
And how long ago do you think they were created?
