Religious sex shaming is very good for the porn industry.

I submit...that's the reason why the areas with heavy religious saturation are such good markets for pornographic products.
The good thing is...with the advent of the World Wide Web (good for them, not for the people producing porn...it has really hurt the revenue) they can obtain pornography without public knowledge. Before, they worried about being seen in the adult theater, the adult bookstore, the adult section of the video store, or having the postal workers (who live and worship in the community) see that they are getting pornography through mail order. This especially applies to women in those areas that wish to obtain pornographic products...as they are much more targeted for "sex shaming" than men.

Sex is simply a useful fulcrum of control. I don't think religions have prurient interest in sexual habits so much as they see it as useful in creating dependence, perpetuating cycles of shame / absolution, placing the sheeple at a psychological disadvantage, etc. Conformity of any kind is a very important control mechanism, and getting people to give up any important part of their freedom to the group produces a strong influence based on our innate desire to be self-consistent and to practice social reciprocity. Once a person has ego invested in (refraining from) certain sexual practices, it gets harder and harder over time to depart from group norms, because you not only have to admit you were wrong, but that you missed out on all the fun for no good reason ;-) When you're old, you end up like me: sexually speaking, it's all over but the shouting and I don't even have all that many fond memories to look back on. I can count 'em on, like 3 fingers. Fortunately I know at least intellectually that it's a lot of to-do about not much of anything, but it'd be nice to have had it experientially out of my system, too.

This investment accounts for the prudish, slavish adherence to strictures on the part of the old, and the urgency, nay, desperation to reproduce it in their young. That, and the not entirely irrational fear of unintended consequences should we *gasp* simply enjoy and explore our sexuality.

That is very true indeed. For example: where is the most gay internet porn consumed? You guessed it: below the Bible Belt (pun intended)

Bible Belt leads the nation in consumption of gay porn

Very true indeed. Let's not forget the most famous "dirty book" in history is also a religious book:

Kama Sutra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am not sure which religion we are speaking of?

Seems that religions tend to cover it and in some instances, sex between certain individuals is a major, hot button issue in that religion and society in general.

Anything other than penis in vagina for the purpose of conceiving a child is sinful sodomy.
